We always abide by and follow the law when flying of our drones!

We take the safety of our drone operations very seriously, always following and abiding with Transport Canada regulations. To ensure we can do this while balancing the needs and requirements of a client base in HRM and beyond, we use micro-drones (officially called Micro Remotely Piloted Aircraft).

Micro-drones are drones that way less than 250 grams, which significantly reduces the risk they pose to public and flight safety. As such they and are not subject to some of the licensing and application approvals of larger drones. This allows us to shoot, with caution, in around downtown Halifax and Dartmouth, as well as other areas where drones are typically restricted (such as aerodromes). Although we are allowed to fly in these areas, they are controlled airspaces due to obvious reasons such as the Heliport at IWK. What this means is that on the day of the shoot we will fully assess the area before we take off, which includes looking and listening for any aircraft. We will always maintain visual line of sight of the drone, and only fly for the absolute minimum time required while keeping the drone at a safe height.

The only two areas where we absolutely cannot shoot are in and around CFB Halifax (Magazine Hill) and eastwards out to sea from the edge of Cow Bay and Eastern Passage (the airspace used for taking/landing at CFB Shearwater).

The one aviation regulation which we always need to maintain strict adherence to is Section 900.06 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations Part IX: “No person shall operate a remotely piloted aircraft system in such a reckless or negligent manner as to endanger or be likely to endanger aviation safety or the safety of any person.”

If at any time during a shoot we feel that our ability to meet this regulation may be compromised, then we will not be able to shoot as planned and scheduled that day. We know you’ll be fully understanding should this occur.

We also follow and respect Transport Canada’s Privacy Guidelines (for instance, without permission, we won’t take footage of people or possessions where they would reasonably expect privacy (i.e., their backyard).
